Rancho Santa Margarita, ranked as the second Safest City in California in its 2013 rankings of “The SafeWise Safest Cities in California,” is one of Orange County’s youngest cities, and is a master-planned community. The first homes in the city were built and sold in 1986, and the city incorporated on January 1, 2000, also adding the surrounding communities of Robinson Ranch, Dove Canyon, Rancho Cielo, Trabuco Highlands, and Walden to it.
Students who live in Rancho Santa Margarita attend schools in either the Capistrano Unified School District or Saddleback Valley Unified School District, depending on where in “RSM” they live. Schools include Arroyo Vista, Las Flores, Trabuco Mesa, Tijeras Creek, Cielo Vista and Melinda Heights Elementary, Rancho Santa Margarita Intermediate, Trabuco Mesa and Arroyo Vista Middle schools, and Trabuco Hills and Tesoro High Schools.
